I grunted with effort, holding the taragorian’s horns and yanked its head back so Charlie and Kulani could slice its neck. My team was quick, so I didn’t have to wait long for the beast to fall to the ground. I held onto its head for a full minute afterward to make sure it wasn’t playing dead, then released it and glanced around the street.

We were on a random street in the city, surrounded by townhomes, and I was pretty sure we’d just killed the last taragorian. Mads, Jude, and Ash had closed the breach twenty minutes ago, so we’d been chasing all the loose monsters. The tear had been a big one and hadn’t been easy to close, or at least it’d looked that way to me, but those three took care of it like I knew they would.

I hated when taragorians got loose in a neighborhood like this. Everyone in the area should’ve received an alert on their HIDs, but that didn’t mean that someone didn’t decide to ignore it and continue cutting the grass, or that there weren’t kids playing outside in a yard.

Although I had to admit that I was happy to be back at it. Having desk duty while Jude recovered had been pure torture. The other shifters and I had spent as much time training in the gym as we were allowed. Harriet had come down with us every time, too. Lately, it seemed like she wanted to be a part of the team more than someone in charge of it. I was here for it. I liked Harriet.

Mads and Jude had come back to work three days ago, and they both seemed okay, if a bit tired. I could tell Jude was still having nightmares because he had dark circles under his eyes. I’d have to make him stay in our room tonight, which was going to turn into an argument from him. But the guy needed to sleep, and he obviously hadn’t gotten any last night when he’d slept in his own room alone. The stubborn ass. Sometimes I swore he was as bad as Mads.

Into my HID, I said, “Any signs of more, Harriet?”

She responded right away. “No, that was the last one. I went back and watched the feed from a camera posted outside one of the homes. It had the perfect shot of the veil tear, so I was able to count how many came through. We’re all good, guys. Wrap it up and head to the truck.”

“Roger that.” To my team, I said, “You heard her. Let’s get out of here.”

One of the best parts about moving to a large city—they had their own cleaning crew. Back in Arkansas, we’d had to clean up and dispose of taragorian bodies ourselves. That had been very unpleasant and hard work. Those things were not light.

My team, including my magi, followed me to our truck, and I watched Ash get in his truck with Simon. The McKenna Team was working out pretty well so far.
